10.1.10 Setting Default Targeting for your Media Buying Campaign Items
Overview: Why Use Default Targeting Sets?
Setting default targeting for your Media Buying Campaign Items using Targeting Sets streamlines the campaign creation process significantly.
By pre-defining common targeting criteria in a reusable template (Targeting Set) and linking it to your Products or Ad Types, you ensure consistency and reduce manual effort.
This minimizes errors and saves valuable time, allowing planners to focus on refining campaign specifics rather than repeatedly selecting the same base targeting. For Example: Instead of selecting the same target devices each time for your campaigns, you can automatically include them and save your users the additional work!
How it works
If default targeting is set up, this is how it will impact your users:
Add Campaign Item: In Campaign Builder, you add your Media Buying product via the usual flow (for example via Media Search)
Targeting Pre-populated: When you navigate to the 'Targeting' section for that Campaign Item, you will see that the targeting criteria from the linked Targeting Set are already applied.
Modify as Needed: The applied targeting is a starting point. Users can still modify it for the specific Campaign Item – adding, removing, or changing criteria as required for that particular placement, without affecting the original Targeting Set template.
By using default Targeting Sets, you can significantly accelerate your Media Buying planning process while maintaining high standards of targeting accuracy and consistency.
Tip: Using the Campaign Builder setup and Targeting Setting, additionally allows you to hide certain targeting options from your users, so they can’t modify defaults.
Use-Cases
Default Targeting Criteria: For your Integration you want to use certain default settings, that are always true and should not be modified by your users. You can create a targeting set with those and additional hide the relevant targeting categories in Campaign Builder. Assign the targeting set to all your Ad Specs or Ad Types for your target platform.
Product Based preselection: You want to define certain products for your users to choose from in form of AdSpecs. You can use the flexible targeting sets to combine them with additional criteria, such as a specific device targeting or selection of Suppliers for the bidding!
Advertiser Based Selection: Assign flexible targeting sets to your Accounts, so that if a certain Advertiser is used for your Media Campaign, they are automatically included. This can be useful for Client specific keywords or blocklists!
How to Set Up Default Targeting
You can link a Targeting Set to a Ad Spec or Ad Type record. When a Campaign Item using that Product or Ad Type is added in Campaign Builder, the linked Targeting Set will be automatically applied.
