3.3.5.5 Dynamic Pricing Use cases / Examples

Example 1 - runtime partially within validity of Price Rules

A typical use case for Price Rules is a Seasonal Index. If you want to charge more or less for your Item throughout certain periods of time you can define this with Price Rules and apply surcharges/discounts easily to matching Campaign Items.

The screenshot below displays a simple example: I want to surcharge 10% on the Sales Price of Campaign Items that run in January 2019 on Site1.

Now if I add an AdSpec to my Campaign that is connected to Site1 and that has a runtime that is completely or partly in January 2019 and I click the button "Apply Price Rules" on that item in the Media Configuration the field Surcharge Sales Price % will be filled.

After you click the button "Apply Price Rules" all Price Rules matching to the configurations on your Campaign Item will be applied. You will see which rules were applied and which fields where updated with which value.

If the runtime of the Campaign Item and the Validity Period of the Price Rule do not match completely the value will be calculated accordingly. See the table below for a simple calculation example:

Campaign Item

Run Time

Value in field Surcharge Sales Price %

Comment

Campaign Item

Run Time

Value in field Surcharge Sales Price %

Comment

Site1_Placement1_AdType

01.01.2019 - 31.01.2019

10%

The item is surcharged with 10% for the full runtime

01.12.2018 - 31.01.2019

5%

The item is surcharged with 10% for half of the runtime

You can also define Price Rules that are applicable when certain kinds of Targeting or Frequency Capping are set on your Campaign Item. Have a look at

  1. 3.5.2 Define Matching Criteria

to get an overview over all the possible Matching Criteria.

Example 2 - Multiple applicable Price Rules

Where multiple Price Rules are applicable to a Campaign Item for the same field (for example Surcharge Sales Price %), a cumulative approach is taken and applied to the Campaign Item.

For example:

  • Price Rule 1: Surcharge January 5 % - 01.01.2020 - 31.01.2020

  • Price Rule 2: Surcharge January 10 % - 01.01.2020 - 31.01.2020

With a Campaign Item from 01.01.2020 - 31.01.2020, you will get the following result when you apply Price Rules:

To implement a logic for handling the application of multiple rules to the same Campaign Item, you can also use Group Logic, see below for an example.

Example 3 - Grouping

It it also possible to Group your rules and define a particular Group Logic for when multiple rules within the same Group are applicable.

The screenshot below displays a simple example: I want to surcharge 12.5% on the Sales Price of Campaign Items that run in January 2020 on Site 2. This Price Rule however is part of a Group of Price Rules where the Group Logic is that the Price Rule with the Maximum value should apply.

So, for example, in the Media Configuration for a particular Campaign Item Where the Surcharge January 5 % Price Rule (Group: Site2Group) is applicable, but the Surcharge January 12.5 % (also Group: Site2Group) is also applicable, the 12.5% charge will be applied due to the Group Logic of Maximum. This logic happens automatically and discreetly in the background.

Group Logic is available for Minimum and Maximum applications of the applicable Price Rules.
